National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared about a massive asteroid, 2013 FW13, which is scheduled to make a close approach to Earth on September 18, 2024. The asteroid is approximately 510 feet in diameter which is about the height of a tall skyscraper. It is reported to pass within 2.02 million miles of our plane which may sound like a huge distance but is relatively close in astronomical terms.
This upcoming event provides a unique opportunity for scientists to study the asteroid, which was first discovered in March 2013 by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii. Classified as a near-Earth object (NEO), 2013 FW13 is part of the Apollo group, known for their Earth-crossing orbits that periodically bring them near our planet.
Does Asteroid 2013 FW13 posses danger?
Despite its proximity, NASA has reassured the public that there is no danger associated with this flyby. The asteroid will speed past Earth at approximately 33,000 miles per hour, a velocity that is impressive but poses no risk. For context, this distance is about eight times the space between Earth and the Moon.
The close approach of 2013 FW13 is an important event for researchers, as it provides a valuable opportunity to gather data on asteroid behaviour and refine our understanding of their orbits. Such observations are crucial for planetary defence efforts. Although this asteroid will not impact Earth, tracking its trajectory helps scientists monitor potential future threats.
NASA's initiatives:
This highlights the importance of ongoing initiatives like NASA's near-Earth asteroid tracking programme. These efforts are aimed at identifying and monitoring asteroids that could pose a risk to Earth. One notable programme is the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which tests methods for deflecting potentially hazardous asteroids.
