Microsoft Copilot’s AI assistant, Mico, can transform into the iconic Clippy from the 90s! Learn how to unlock nostalgic Clippy with an AI twist in this guide

Clippy, Microsoft’s first-ever digital assistant introduced alongside Windows 97, is officially making a comeback—this time with a new name and an artificial intelligence upgrade. Once mocked for being intrusive yet later adored for its nostalgic charm, Clippy has been reincarnated through Microsoft’s latest AI companion, called Mico.
Mico serves as the new interactive assistant within Microsoft Copilot, allowing users to engage through voice commands. The blob-shaped digital companion reacts dynamically to interactions, altering its colour and expressions in real time. Microsoft describes Mico as a “supportive buddy” for Copilot users, designed to create a more personable and engaging interface.
Interestingly, Mico bears a resemblance to the animated AI persona Microsoft showcased for Copilot on Samsung TVs. However, the company has clarified that using Mico is entirely optional—users can choose to disable it or, for those craving nostalgia, bring back the beloved Clippy instead.
How to Bring Clippy Back in Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) demonstrating how Mico can transform into Clippy.
In another video shared by a user testingcatalog all users need to do is tap on Mico a set number of times within the Copilot app, after which it morphs into a modernised version of Clippy. The refreshed design maintains Clippy’s signature charm while fitting seamlessly into today’s AI-driven interface. Alternatively, users can also type “/clippy” into Copilot’s prompt bar to summon the iconic paperclip assistant.
Even without activating Clippy, Mico retains its spiritual essence. While the original Clippy guided users through tasks in Microsoft Word, Mico is built to help users navigate Copilot’s AI ecosystem more efficiently, particularly with voice-based interactions and commands.
Other updates to Microsoft Copilot
Alongside the introduction of Mico, Microsoft has rolled out a series of new features for Copilot. Users can now initiate group chats of up to 32 participants, a feature designed to enhance collaboration in team projects and workplace environments.
Another addition is the “real talk” capability, enabling Copilot to offer more candid and constructive feedback rather than simply agreeing with user inputs—a step towards making AI interactions more human-like and productive.
Moreover, Microsoft has launched Copilot Health, an AI-powered feature that references trusted medical sources such as Harvard Health. This tool assists users in finding healthcare information and even recommends suitable doctors based on individual requirements.
With Mico and these new capabilities, Microsoft appears to be redefining how AI assistants interact with users—balancing nostalgia with innovation while ensuring that Clippy’s playful spirit lives on in the AI era.
