
Thiruvananthapuram: A consortium of companies from Kerala led by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy Council (K-DISC) has indigenously developed lithium-titanate or lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) battery for use in electric vehicles.
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, manufactured the electrodes used in batteries using LTO delivered by Travancore Titanium Products. Later, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will give the finishing touches by incorporating the power electronic systems used in the battery. The prototype of the LTO battery was unveiled by the Kerala Chief Minister last day.
The 2.3-volt 20 ampere-hour(Ah) battery has fast charging features.
"The components used in the battery were imported from China. We examined whether we could manufacture battery using the lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) produced by Travancore Titanium Products," said Ashok Kumar, the consultant of the Electric Vehicle Division of K-DISC. He added that the battery would be ready for commercial production after incorporating a few changes.
The project is seen as a significant step forward for the state in the field of producing safe and cost-effective automotive batteries.
Trivandrum Engineering Science Research Park, constituted by the government under Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College, was tasked to conduct the research.
