India's digital landscape continues its explosive growth, with the number of internet subscribers crossing the 1-billion mark for the first time. According to a recent report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the subscriber base reached 1,002.85 million by June 30, 2025, a robust quarterly increase of 3.48%.

The surge is primarily fueled by the expansion of broadband services. The report highlights that 979.71 million subscribers now have a broadband connection, representing a 3.77% jump. In contrast, narrowband users have declined to 23.14 million, indicating a clear shift toward higher-speed internet.

Wireless dominates, Urban and Rural gap narrows

The data reveals a stark preference for wireless connections, with 958.1 million subscribers using mobile internet compared to just 44.7 million on wired connections.

The total number of telephone subscribers also grew to 1,218.36 million during the same period, pushing the overall teledensity to 86.09%.

The report also shows a narrowing of the digital divide between urban and rural areas. Urban internet subscribers currently stand at 579.4 million, while rural subscribers are not far behind at 423.3 million, showcasing the deep penetration of internet services across the country.
