Humanise your writing by injecting personal voice and varied sentence structures

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have become part of everyday life, lending a hand with tasks from drafting emails to preparing essays. But along with their convenience comes a curious side effect. Even though AI writing systems are advanced, their outputs still fall short compared to lively, human prose.
To keep your work from sounding machine-made, here are a few practical tips:
Why AI text often feels unnatural
There are certain patterns in AI writing that make it easy to spot. One of the most obvious is the overuse of the em dash (—), the long dash that tends to interrupt or over-explain a sentence. While it is harmless in moderation, it has become something of a signature of AI text.
The repetition trap
AI outputs often fall into repetitive rhythms. Sentences begin and end in familiar ways, creating a flat, predictable flow. Once you notice it, the uniformity is hard to miss.
When transitions take over
Phrases such as “in conclusion,” “on the other hand,” or “in significant development” appear too frequently in AI-written drafts. While useful occasionally, their overuse makes the writing feel mechanical rather than natural.
The problem of a flat tone
AI writing tends to play it safe. The result is a neutral, generic tone that avoids risk but also lacks colour or energy. This can leave the piece feeling bland, even if the subject matter is engaging.
Formal words that feel out of place
Chatbots lean towards polysyllabic or old-fashioned words, giving the text an unnecessarily formal edge. These are terms that people rarely use in everyday conversations, which makes the writing feel distant and unnatural.
Shallow treatment of complex topics
AI is good at summaries but struggles with depth. Instead of nuance, it offers surface-level explanations, skimming over complexities or lived experiences that would make the text more authentic.
Tips to keep your writing human
Thankfully, avoiding these pitfalls is simpler than it seems. By making conscious choices, you can ensure your writing feels genuinely yours.
Add your own voice
AI cannot capture the quirks of a personal voice. Include your experiences, opinions, or even small confessions. For instance, “A morning walk clears my head better than coffee ever could” sounds far more authentic than a textbook-like “Exercise is important for health.”
Play with sentence length and flow
One giveaway of AI text is the sameness of sentence length. Break the monotony with short, sharp lines followed by longer, winding ones. This variety keeps readers interested and mirrors the natural flow of human thought.
Break away from predictable phrasing
Since AI predicts text, it leans on predictable phrases. Swap “in today’s fast-paced world” or “with that being said” for expressions that better reflect your own style or context.
Bring scenes to life with details
Humans excel at showmanship. Instead of writing, “The park is always busy in the evenings,” bring it to life with, “Children chase kites across the grass and joggers weave past couples sharing roasted peanuts on park benches.”
Embrace context and nuance
AI avoids grey areas. You do not have to. Include exceptions, cultural references, or counterpoints. It shows thoughtfulness and makes your piece stand out as distinctly human.
