Elon Musk has revealed that social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will release its updated recommendation algorithm to the public within seven days. The disclosure will include the full code responsible for determining which posts and advertisements are suggested to users.

Musk, who owns X, posted on the platform on Saturday, “We will make the new X algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days.”

He added that the open-source release would be repeated every four weeks, accompanied by detailed developer notes to highlight any modifications.

“This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed,” Musk added.

While Musk did not explain the reasoning behind making the algorithm open-source, the platform has faced scrutiny from regulators over the content shown to users.

Earlier, some X users had reported seeing fewer posts from accounts they follow. In October, Musk acknowledged a “significant bug” in the platform’s “For You” algorithm and promised a correction.

The platform has also been integrating more artificial intelligence into its recommendation engine, leveraging Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, to refine content suggestions.

Although Musk has pledged in the past to make certain algorithms public, implementation has been inconsistent.

Social media response

Reaction on X has been mixed. One user commented, “wait wasn't it already open source last year? what happened to that?”. Another user wrote, “Thank you. It feels like followers are not seeing the posts of people they follow, which is counterintuitive, because usually the reason people follow others is because they want to see their posts.”

Some creators expressed frustration over frequent changes, with one noting, “Will the algorithm ever stabilise so once we learn how to use it we can actually experiment growth? Every creator I talked to, me included, are very frustrated about the constant changes and how difficult it is to build a following here lately… We still love X though.”
