Confusion spread on X after viral posts claimed video links couldn’t be copied

A wave of viral posts on 1 April briefly caused confusion among users of X, after claims circulated that the platform had removed the ability to copy video links.
The rumours spread rapidly, with many users suggesting they were unable to share videos via direct URLs. Some posts went further, speculating that the alleged change was deliberate and possibly aimed at restricting certain types of content, including political videos.
Several widely shared messages claimed that copying video links was no longer possible, with one typical post stating: “You can't copy video links anymore, the video automatically starts playing.”
But was the claim true?
However, doubts soon emerged as other users reported no issues with the feature. Many said they were still able to copy and share video links as usual, contradicting the viral claims.
It later became clear that the confusion stemmed from an April Fools’ Day prank rather than any genuine platform update.
Users were quick to point this out, with one posting: “Just copied this video link… Why are people saying that copying video links isn't possible anymore?”
There has been no official announcement from X regarding any changes to video link functionality. The feature remains fully operational across both the mobile app and desktop versions of the platform.
Users can continue to copy video links in the usual way — by tapping the share icon and selecting “Copy link” on mobile, or by right-clicking and copying the video address on desktop.
