Borderlands 4 smashed franchise records on Steam, hitting over 200,000 concurrent players and topping sales charts

Borderlands 4 has officially made its mark as the biggest Steam launch ever in the Borderlands series, reaching over 200,000 concurrent players shortly after release. According to statistics from SteamDB, the game peaked at around 207,479 players online simultaneously within the first few days, surpassing previous records set by Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3.
Gearbox Software’s latest instalment in the popular looter-shooter franchise dominated the Steam charts, becoming the top-selling title globally and in the United States soon after launch. The game’s strong player count highlights the franchise’s continued popularity and the anticipation from fans for fresh gameplay experiences.
However, despite the impressive player turnout, Borderlands 4 received mixed reviews from players, primarily due to performance issues on PC. Many users reported low frame rates, crashes, stuttering, and bugs that adversely affected gameplay, even on high-performance systems. These concerns have somewhat dampened the overall reception, with the game sitting at a “Mixed” rating on Steam as users await patches and optimisations.
Borderlands 4 is currently available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with upcoming releases planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The game supports cross-platform multiplayer, allowing players to team up regardless of their chosen system.
Despite the initial technical hurdles, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford expressed strong confidence in the game’s future, anticipating that Borderlands 4 will push the franchise past 100 million cumulative sales. The release on Nintendo Switch 2 in October is expected to further bolster sales and player engagement.
