Apple has once again left consumers divided with its latest creation – a minimalist fabric accessory called the iPhone Pocket. Priced at up to $229.95, the product is the result of a high-fashion collaboration between Apple and Japanese designer Issey Miyake. While some see it as a bold blend of technology and design, others are calling it nothing more than “a $230 sock for your iPhone.”

What is the iPhone pocket?

The iPhone Pocket isn’t a typical phone case. Instead, it’s a 3D-knitted fabric pouch designed to snugly hold your iPhone along with small items like AirPods, keys, or lip balm. Apple describes it as “a piece of cloth” that functions as “an additional pocket” rather than a protective shell.

The accessory comes in two versions – a long crossbody model priced at $229.95 and a shorter charm-style version available for $149.95. The long variant is offered in shades of blue, brown, and black, while the short version features a more colourful palette including orange, yellow, purple, pink, turquoise, and other vibrant hues.

Design and meaning

According to Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director at Miyake Design Studio, “The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user.” He explained that the concept explores “the joy of wearing an iPhone in your own way.”

The idea reportedly originated from the notion of transforming a simple piece of fabric into a functional object. In true Issey Miyake fashion, the iPhone Pocket is part art, part utility – a continuation of the designer’s famous Pleats Please philosophy that combines texture, movement, and everyday functionality.

Interestingly, this project also carries a symbolic legacy. Steve Jobs, who famously wore Miyake’s black turtlenecks, shared a mutual respect with the designer. Though the two never officially collaborated during their lifetimes, this release has been described as a posthumous tribute to both visionaries.

Collaboration and design process

This marks Apple’s first major fashion collaboration since the Apple Watch Hermès partnership in 2015. Miyamae and his team worked closely with Apple’s designers in Cupertino, even experimenting with origami prototypes during the early stages of development. Miyamae likened the creative process to “a jazz session,” where ideas flowed freely and spontaneously.

Molly Anderson, Apple’s vice president of Industrial Design, said the partnership “wasn’t planned” but evolved naturally, adding that both teams shared similar creative values. One of Miyake’s proposed colours – mandarin orange – coincidentally matched Apple’s unreleased iPhone 17 Cosmic Orange, which Anderson called “a lovely moment.”

Features and functionality

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Apple claims the iPhone Pocket offers flexibility and durability. Its 3D-knit construction expands to fit any iPhone model and small essentials, while the ribbed fabric subtly reveals the device’s display without fully exposing it.

Apple says the knit allows for wireless charging passthrough when the phone is inside, and the structure provides a secure fit for movement, suitable for everyday use or even light activity. The product reportedly aligns with Apple’s carbon-neutral initiatives, potentially incorporating recycled materials – though no official details have been disclosed.

Colours and packaging

The iPhone Pocket’s colour palette reflects Miyake’s artistic flair. The short strap variant comes in Lemon, Mandarin, Purple, Pink, Peacock, Sapphire, Cinnamon, and Black, while the long strap version is available in Sapphire, Cinnamon, and Black.

Even the packaging reflects Japanese design sensibilities – frosted paper wrappers inspired by Japanese candy bags used at festivals. Miyamae said the experience of unwrapping it “feels like opening a gift full of candy.”

Pricing and availability

The iPhone Pocket will go on sale November 14, available at select Apple Stores and online in the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Greater China, and no release yet confirmed for India.

It will retail for $229.95 (approx. ₹20,400) for the long strap version and $149.95 (approx. ₹13,200) for the short strap model.

Flagship outlets like Apple Ginza (Tokyo), Apple Regent Street (London), Apple SoHo (New York), and Apple Marché Saint-Germain (Paris) will feature the product. Availability will be limited, and pre-orders open alongside in-store demonstrations showcasing various styling options.

A nod to the past

Back in 2004, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs humorously introduced the $29 iPod Socks, calling them a “revolutionary new product.” Two decades later, the iPhone Pocket feels like a luxury reincarnation of that idea – one that blends nostalgia, craftsmanship, and Apple’s penchant for turning everyday simplicity into a status symbol.

As Miyamae put it, “Both these great masterminds are now gone, but we continue to challenge ourselves to create new and original things.”
