Apple has introduced HomeView, a new AI-powered smart home display featuring an upgraded Siri assistant, as the technology giant seeks to strengthen its presence in the connected home market dominated by Amazon and Google.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the device features a seven-inch square touchscreen mounted on a speaker base and is designed to serve as a central hub for managing smart home appliances and everyday household activities.

HomeView will be available in the United States from November 13, with a starting price of $299.

The launch marks Apple's latest attempt to expand beyond smartphones and establish a stronger foothold in the smart home segment, where its HomePod speakers have struggled to compete with Amazon's Alexa-powered products and Google's AI-integrated devices.

Industry analysts view the introduction of HomeView as part of Apple's broader strategy to retain customers within its ecosystem while responding to growing competition from technology companies developing artificial intelligence-powered consumer hardware.

The announcement also marks one of the first major product launches under John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as Apple's chief executive on September 1. Ternus previously headed the company's hardware engineering division.

What can Apple's HomeView do?

Designed as a household control centre, HomeView allows users to operate compatible smart devices, including lights, door locks, thermostats and security cameras, through voice commands and its touchscreen interface.

The device also supports FaceTime video calls, music streaming and video playback, bringing communication and entertainment features into a single home-based system.

When not actively in use, HomeView can function as a digital photo frame, displaying pictures on its seven-inch screen.

To expand compatibility with connected household products, Apple has partnered with South Korea's LG and France's Schneider for smart locks and thermostats.

Revamped Siri AI takes centre stage

A major highlight of HomeView is the integration of Siri AI, Apple's redesigned voice assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.

Unlike the earlier version of Siri, the upgraded assistant is intended to deliver more natural, conversational interactions while helping users manage connected devices and household tasks.

The new Siri AI incorporates technology from Google's Gemini artificial intelligence models, reflecting Apple's efforts to accelerate its development of generative AI capabilities.

The company is positioning the enhanced assistant as a key feature of its next generation of connected devices as competition intensifies in the consumer AI market.

The launch comes as several technology companies, including OpenAI, explore AI-powered hardware that could change how consumers interact with digital assistants.

Why HomeView will not launch in Europe immediately

Despite its planned US release, HomeView will not be available in the European Union initially.

Apple said it is working to ensure that its revamped Siri AI complies with European competition regulations before introducing the device in the region.

The company stated that it is engaging constructively with EU authorities to address regulatory concerns and identify a path for launching the product in European markets.

However, Apple has not announced a timeline for HomeView's availability in the European Union.

With HomeView, Apple is making another attempt to establish its smart home ecosystem as a major part of consumers' daily lives, combining connected device management, entertainment and generative AI in a single product.
