Dubai: World No. 11 Daniil Medvedev called Wednesday for a sweeping transformation of the ATP ranking structure, suggesting a system that would prioritise elite events to alleviate the physical toll on the professional circuit.

Speaking following his victory over Stan Wawrinka at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, the 30-year-old Russian proposed that ranking points should be restricted to Grand Slams and Masters 1000 tournaments. He argued that the current 11-month calendar traps players in a "vicious cycle" of competing in lower-tier events merely to maintain their seeding or to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals.

Streamlining the Circuit

Medvedev’s blueprint would effectively reclassify ATP 500 and 250-level tournaments. Under his vision, these events would serve as high-stakes exhibitions rather than mandatory stops for the world’s top-ranked players.

  • The Proposed Core: Ranking weight would be condensed into the four Grand Slams and 11 Masters 1000 events.
  • The Incentive: By removing points from smaller tournaments, Medvedev believes players would feel less "forced" to play through fatigue or lingering injuries to protect their world standing.
  • The Rune Precedent: To illustrate his point, Medvedev referenced Holger Rune’s recent Achilles injury suffered during an ATP 250 event in late 2025. "If there were no points there, it's an easier decision [to rest]," Medvedev said.

The Friction of Finance

The former US Open champion acknowledged that his proposal faces significant commercial hurdles, as tournament organisers rely on the presence of star players to drive ticket sales and broadcast revenue.

"It’s business," Medvedev conceded. "The other tournaments won’t say, 'OK, we’re out,' because they would lose money. Right now, with how the ATP Tour is, it’s never going to change, at least while I’m playing."

The Current Landscape vs. Medvedev’s Vision

The ATP has implemented minor adjustments for the 2026 season, including a slight reduction in mandatory commitments, but Medvedev maintains these "tweaks" fail to address the fundamental problem of the year-long grind.

While ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi has previously asserted that player participation beyond mandatory events is a matter of personal choice, the Russian star insists the point system makes that choice an illusion for those aiming for the top.
