McLaren’s qualifying breakthrough in Madrid continues a strong mid-season resurgence following a difficult start under Formula 1's sweeping 2026 technical regulations. The Woking-based squad initially struggled for pace early in the year but hit their stride with back-to-back victories at the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix. Norris’s pole-winning effort was all the more remarkable given his disrupted preparations; the British driver lost almost the entirety of Friday’s Second Practice session to a gearbox defect before producing a weekend-best lap of 1:31.824 in Q3.
