Verstappen claimed the pole position, beating Piastri by a mere 0.103 seconds

Silverstone:
Max Verstappen delivered a classic performance on Saturday, snatching pole position for the 2025 British Grand Prix in a nail-biting qualifying session at Silverstone. The Red Bull ace's last-gasp lap denied McLaren a home pole, setting the stage for an explosive race today that could be heavily influenced by unpredictable British weather.
Saturday's Qualifying was a spectacle of high-stakes precision. After what had seemed like a slightly off-kilter Friday, Verstappen found blistering pace when it counted most, putting in a sensational 1m 24.892s lap in Q3. This was just enough to edge out McLaren's Oscar Piastri by a mere 0.103 seconds. Piastri's teammate, home hero Lando Norris, will start right alongside him in third, only 0.118s off pole, promising a thrilling chase of the Dutchman.
Local favourite George Russell impressed for Mercedes, securing a strong fourth on the grid, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton in fifth for Ferrari. Hamilton, who had topped FP1 on Friday, couldn't quite hook up his final Q3 lap to challenge for pole, but his and teammate Charles Leclerc's (starting sixth) strong weekend pace suggests Ferrari will be a force.
The final Free Practice 3 (FP3) session earlier on Saturday offered a taste of the fierce competition, with Charles Leclerc topping the timesheets. However, the session saw multiple red flags, including incidents involving Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto and a bizarre pit lane crash from Haas's Oliver Bearman, who later received a 10-place grid penalty for a red flag infringement, significantly impacting his starting position for today's race.
The stage is now set for the main event at the 'Home of British Motorsport' on Sunday. The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 PM IST (3:00 PM BST). Weather remains a major talking point. After a windy Friday and an overcast Saturday, there's a persistent 20-60% chance of showers throughout the race, with temperatures around 19-21 degrees Celsius. This could introduce critical strategic decisions, pit stop gambles, and unpredictable on-track action, potentially creating a classic Silverstone thriller.
