Hockey India has denied claims that former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was sacked as the junior men’s team head coach, stating that his tenure ended as per contract.

Hockey India has clarified that PR Sreejesh was not removed from his role as the head coach of the Indian men’s junior hockey team. The federation stated that his coaching term officially ended in December 2025 as per contract.
According to Hockey India, the position was subsequently advertised and filled through a selection process based on merit. The governing body confirmed that a new coach has been finalised and will be announced soon.

Hockey India also stated that Sreejesh was offered a position as coach of the development team, which focuses on preparing players for the next Olympic cycle. However, it said he did not accept the role despite being asked to reconsider.
Denial of foreign coach preference claim
The federation rejected allegations that Sreejesh was replaced to make way for a foreign coach. It said there was no directive or preference conveyed in that regard and emphasised its focus on developing Indian coaching talent.
PR Sreejesh had earlier posted on social media questioning the preference for foreign coaches and suggesting that he was removed despite the team’s strong performances under his tenure. He also highlighted concerns over the development of Indian coaches.
Hockey India said the coaching change is part of its structured development pathway and broader plans to strengthen Indian hockey leading into future international competitions.
