Mugello: Nearly five years after his terrifying crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean is set to drive a Formula 1 car again. On Friday, September 26, 2025, Grosjean will reunite with his former team, Haas, to test their 2023 VF-23 car at Mugello, Italy. This will be his first time behind the wheel of an F1 car since the accident that abruptly ended his career in the sport.

The 2020 Bahrain Crash: Turning Point

Grosjean suffered a horrific 67G impact when his Haas car smashed through barriers and caught fire on the first lap of the Bahrain GP. Though trapped for 27 seconds in the burning wreckage, he escaped with burns to his hands alone, thanks to Formula 1’s advanced safety measures like the halo device. The crash forced him to miss the last two races of 2020 and ended his F1 tenure after five seasons with Haas.

Life After Formula 1

Since leaving F1, Grosjean has raced in IndyCar and endurance events in the United States, including the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He notched several pole positions and podium finishes, showing his continued competitive spirit.

The Farewell Test at Mugello

Back with Haas, Grosjean will drive the 2023 VF-23 car in the Testing of Previous Cars program. He will be reunited with former team colleagues, including Ayao Komatsu, now Haas team principal and once his race engineer. Grosjean will wear a helmet designed by his children, originally intended for his final 2020 race, making the day deeply personal.

Grosjean's Reflections

Expressing excitement, Grosjean said the opportunity to drive again with his old team is "truly something special." He looks forward to reminiscing and contributing to the team’s ongoing development efforts.
