Monza: The 2025 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza ended with Max Verstappen delivering a commanding performance to secure his third win of the season. The historic "Temple of Speed" witnessed intense racing, strategic calls, and off-track drama that highlighted the championship battle unfolding.

Verstappen reclaims lead after first-lap drama

Starting from pole, Verstappen initially led but was pushed onto the grass on the opening lap by Lando Norris, temporarily losing the lead. Verstappen retook first place on lap 4 at the first chicane and controlled the pace throughout the remaining 49 laps to triumph by over 19 seconds ahead of Norris.

McLaren’s controversial double podium

Lando Norris finished second, showcasing a resilient drive after the early tussle. Oscar Piastri, championship leader and Norris' teammate, finished third but only after complying with team orders to let Norris reclaim second place following a slow pit stop for Norris.

Key retirement and penalties

Nico Hulkenberg retired on the formation lap due to a power unit issue. During the race, contact between Carlos Sainz and Ollie Bearman led to a penalty for Bearman. Kimi Antonelli also received a five-second penalty for forcing Alex Albon off the track, impacting his final position. Fernando Alonso retired on lap 26 due to suspension failure.

Ferrari and Mercedes fight back

Charles Leclerc thrilled the home crowd with a solid fourth-place finish. Mercedes’ George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with Hamilton recovering impressively from a five-place grid penalty suffered earlier in the season.

Fastest lap and lap times

  • Qualifying Pole Lap: Max Verstappen set a blistering 1:18.792, a new lap record at Monza.
  • Race Fastest Lap: Verstappen also secured the race’s fastest lap, maintaining his dominant pace throughout the event.
