Suzuka: Rookie Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix on Saturday, while four-time world champion Max Verstappen suffered a shock elimination in the second session of qualifying.

Antonelli, 19, delivered a commanding performance at the Suzuka Circuit, recording a lap time of 1:28.778 to lead a Mercedes front-row lockout. The Italian driver, who recently became the youngest pole-sitter in Formula One history, outpaced teammate George Russell by a margin of 0.298 seconds.

The session was defined by the continuous struggle of Red Bull Racing. Verstappen, currently navigating a turbulent 2026 campaign, failed to advance to the final qualifying shootout for the first time this season. The Dutchman reported significant handling issues, citing an "undriveable" balance and instability in high-speed corners. He is set to start Sunday’s race from 11th on the grid.

"We lacked any semblance of consistency today," Verstappen said. "The car was snapping unexpectedly in the S-curves, and at a track like this, you cannot compensate for a lack of rear-end stability. Starting from the midfield will make for a difficult Sunday."

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified third, followed by the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in fourth and fifth, respectively.

The result further signals a shift in the competitive landscape of the 2026 World Championship. While Red Bull continues to troubleshoot the elusive problems of their current livery, Mercedes appears to have established a definitive pace advantage as the season moves into its Asian leg.

The Japanese Grand Prix is scheduled to commence at 10:30 am local time on Sunday.
