While Mercedes is tipped as the favourite, local hero Oscar Piastri topped Friday practice for McLaren. In contrast, Red Bull's Max Verstappen is cautious about his car's pace, and Aston Martin faces severe engine vibration issues that could prevent its drivers from finishing the race.

Melbourne: As spectators gathered at Albert Park on Friday for the 40th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix, the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season was overshadowed by geopolitical uncertainty and radical technical overhauls.
Geopolitical Shadow
The most urgent concern facing the paddock is the potential cancellation or delay of the season’s upcoming Middle Eastern rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, currently scheduled for April 12 and 19. The expanding conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran has rendered regional travel perilous and restricted airspace.
The FIA has already pushed back the World Endurance Championship’s Qatar opener, originally set for late March. While Formula One Management continues to monitor the safety of personnel in real-time, a formal decision regarding the April races is anticipated shortly.
Technical Evolution
On the track, the primary focus remains a dramatic shift in the sport’s hierarchy. The 2026 season introduces new regulations featuring a nearly 50:50 power split between the 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine and harvested electrical energy. This change has forced drivers to adopt new, counterintuitive techniques behind the wheel.
Adding to the intrigue is the debut of Cadillac, the General Motors-backed American entry. While Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc led the final pre-season tests in Bahrain, Mercedes is widely considered the favourite due to a rumoured power unit advantage that has yet to be fully unleashed.
George Russell, a five-time race winner, appeared confident in the Mercedes W17. “The car is performing as we expected. What was very important is seeing the correlation is good, there’s no major scares on the car,” Russell said.
Hamilton and the Ferrari Challenge
Ferrari is expected to challenge for its first Australian victory since 2022. The Scuderia’s design features a smaller, more responsive turbocharger that could provide an edge during standing starts.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, beginning his second year with the Italian team, expressed optimism following winter testing. “An amazing amount of work has been done from the team back at the factory, but also delivering on those tests, and we’ve learned a lot from last year,” Hamilton said.
Local Hero Leads the Field
The Australian crowd is firmly behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who is seeking redemption after narrowly losing the 2025 world title to teammate Lando Norris. Despite a dominant mid-season run last year, a late-season slump cost the Australian the championship.
Addressing the pressure of being the first potential home-grown winner, Piastri joked, “If I had a dollar for every time I got asked that, I’d be a few dollars richer! Every driver wants to win their home race, and that’s no different for me.”
Piastri backed up the hype by topping Friday’s second practice session, finishing two-tenths of a second ahead of the Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Hamilton followed in fourth, while Leclerc rounded out the top five.
Red Bull and Aston Martin Uncertainties
Red Bull's Max Verstappen remains cautious about the RB22’s standing. Despite the car’s efficient energy management, the four-time champion noted, “From the things that I think we learned in Bahrain, at least we were not the quickest. But yeah, I have no idea, we’ll just see where we are here to start with.”
Meanwhile, Aston Martin enters the weekend with significant reliability fears. Team principal and design legend Adrian Newey revealed that the team’s Honda engines are producing vibrations so severe that they pose a risk, causing hand injuries to drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, leaving their ability to finish Sunday’s race in doubt.
Qualifying is set to take place on Saturday.
