Paris: After Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty's exit from the Paris Olympics following a tough loss against Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh in the men's doubles quarterfinals, Mathias Boe, their coach and Taapsee Pannu's husband, announced his retirement from coaching. The popular Indian duo, affectionately known as 'Sat-Chi', had high hopes of securing an Olympic medal but fell short despite a strong start in the knockout stage.
Boe took to Instagram to express his thoughts and congratulate Satwiksairaj and Chirag. He empathised with their disappointment, having experienced similar challenges in his own career. His message conveyed deep respect for their dedication, acknowledging their hard work during the Olympics camp, battling through injuries and setbacks.
In his retirement announcement, Boe reflected on his coaching journey, stating that he had spent considerable time in badminton halls and found coaching to be stressful. He thanked various entities and individuals for their support throughout his coaching career, expressing gratitude for the memories and wishing everyone in Indian badminton the best.
Taapsee Pannu, in her usual humorous style, supported her husband's decision with a playful comment about the realities of married life. She humorously noted that now Boe, as a married man, needed to step back and take care of household duties, urging him to hurry home from work to help with dinner and cleaning.
Under Boe's guidance, Satwiksairaj and Chirag achieved significant milestones, including Commonwealth Games and Asian Games gold medals, a World Championships bronze medal, and several BWF Tour titles. They had a remarkable year in 2024, winning the French Open and Thailand Open titles, and finishing as runners-up in prestigious tournaments like the Malaysian Open and India Open.
Despite their achievements and a peak world ranking in men's doubles, the Paris Olympics did not yield the coveted medal for Satwiksairaj and Chirag. They were also part of the Indian team at the Thomas Cup 2024, where they aimed to defend their title but faced a setback against China in the quarterfinals.
Looking ahead, Taapsee Pannu remains busy with her film projects. She is set to captivate audiences with 'Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba' and 'Khel Khel Mein'.
Mathias Boe's retirement marks the end of an era in Indian badminton coaching. His decision comes after guiding Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty through their most successful years, culminating in multiple international titles and accolades. Taapsee Pannu, known for her wit and charm, lovingly supports her husband's transition from the badminton hall to home duties, while remaining focused on her thriving acting career. ANI
