Kochi: The showcase at the home of Olympic medal-winning Indian hockey goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh is adorned with numerous trophies and certificates, highlighting the Kerala sporting star's on-field brilliance. Following her husband’s retirement from international hockey, Aneeshya, Sreejesh’s wife, reflects on his remarkable journey.

The Olympic bronze Sreejesh and his teammates won in Paris is considered the crowning jewel of his illustrious career—a source of pride for future generations.

“I’m looking at our home’s showcase, filled with awards including the Arjuna Award, but my favourite is a small bottle of sand,” Aneeshya said. “It’s a precious memento from the G.V. Raja Sports School’s front yard, where I first saw Sree. He has always made me proud.”

She continued, “When we got married and started living together, I saw how much Sree loved hockey. I remember him saying when he was first selected for the national camp that it was the start of a long journey, which culminated in an Olympic medal. It’s a dream moment.”

Aneeshya concluded, “As Sree retires from national duty, I feel a mix of pride and happiness. His retirement couldn’t have been more perfect. A big salute to him—hugs and kisses.”

The tiny bottle containing a pinch of soil Sreejesh collected from his favorite sports school will surely rekindle memories of his inspiring career every time he sees it..

Aneeshya is a former long jumper and an Ayurveda doctor. The couple has two children, Anusree and Sreeansh.
