The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has revealed an unexpected facet of his Bharat Jodo Yatra experience. Sharing a long video on social media, Gandhi showcases his practice of jiu-jitsu, offering a glimpse into his unique pastime during the extensive journey.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a martial art renowned for its emphasis on ground fighting and submission techniques, became more than just a fitness routine for Gandhi and his fellow travellers. As they traversed thousands of kilometres, the evening jiu-jitsu sessions evolved into a cherished community activity. Gandhi’s video features him training with young martial artists and yatris.
Sharing his video he wrote, "we had a daily routine of practicing jiu-jitsu every evening at our campsite. What began as a simple way to stay fit, quickly evolved into a community activity, bringing together fellow yatris and young martial arts students from the towns where we stayed."
He revealed the dual purpose of these sessions-- maintaining physical fitness and introducing local youth to the 'Gentle Art.' He writes, "Our goal was to introduce these young minds to the beauty of the ‘Gentle Art’—a harmonious blend of meditation, jiu-jitsu, Aikido, and non-violent conflict resolution techniques. We aimed to instill in them the value of transforming violence into gentleness, giving them the tools to build a more compassionate and safer society."
The video was shared on the ocassion of National Sports Day where he underscores his commitment to promoting the values of jiu-jitsu, transforming conflict into compassion and building a safer, more harmonious society. His post ends with a hint that another Bharat Jodo Yatra might be on his plans and maybe executed soon.
Earlier, Gandhi showcased his jiu-jitsu prowess in a high-profile encounter with renowned wrestler Bajrang Punia at the Virendra Akhara in Haryana. In a memorable session, Gandhi demonstrated various techniques of BJJ, including locks and chokes, impressing both wrestlers and observers alike.
