Kozhikode: Olympian P.R. Sreejesh was honoured by Mathrubhumi at its head office here on Saturday.

The celebrated Indian hockey player, who recently announced his retirement, clinched his second consecutive Olympic bronze medal in Paris, where his team overcame a formidable Spanish side.

The felicitation event took place on Saturday, with P.V. Chandran, Chairman and Managing Editor of Mathrubhumi, presenting Sreejesh with a certificate of merit and a cheque for Rs 5 lakh.

“Sreejesh is the pride of Kerala and indeed the entire country,” remarked P.V. Chandran while honouring the legendary goalkeeper.

During the ceremony, Sreejesh expressed his gratitude towards Mathrubhumi for their support throughout his sports career. He admitted feeling disappointed when his team lost in the semi-finals but also expressed pride in securing a second medal for both India and Kerala.

Meanwhile, Sreejesh urged Mathrubhumi to continue supporting sports and shared his excitement about his new role as the head coach of the junior men’s hockey team, which is currently preparing for the upcoming Junior Hockey World Cup.

The welcome speech was delivered by Assistant Editor K. Viswanath, and the programme was presided over by K.R. Pramod, General Manager of Public Relations at Mathrubhumi.
