Paris: India’s Neeraj Chopra once again demonstrated his world-class form, claiming victory at the Paris Diamond League on Friday night with a commanding first-round throw of 88.16 metres. Despite recording three no-marks in the middle rounds, Chopra’s opening effort was sufficient to secure the top spot throughout the competition.

The Olympic and World Champion wasted no time making his mark, unleashing an 88.16m throw on his very first attempt -- a distance no competitor would manage to surpass. Germany’s Julian Weber came closest with a best of 87.88m, while Brazil’s Mauricio Luiz da Silva rounded out the podium with a third-place finish at 86.62m.

In the first round, Chopra led the field ahead of Weber and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, who managed 80.94m. The second round saw Weber temporarily close in with an 86.20m throw, while Chopra registered a more conservative 85.10m. Walcott slightly improved with 81.66m.

Da Silva entered the fray in the third round with an impressive 86.62m, pushing himself into medal contention. Weber continued to press in the fourth and fifth rounds, throwing 83.13m and 84.50m respectively, but failed to breach the 88m barrier.

Chopra returned in the final round with a solid 82.89m to close out the competition. Weber concluded with 81.08m, and Da Silva registered 78.56m.

Despite the inconsistency in the middle rounds, Chopra’s explosive opening throw proved unmatchable, cementing his place at the top of the standings.

The two-time Olympic medallist will next be seen in action at the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, set to take place on 5 July. The event, originally scheduled for 24 May, was postponed due to heightened cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
