Mumbai: Actor Soha Ali Khan has spoken candidly about her early life circumstances and the inspiration she drew from her mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, to pursue her dreams. Speaking during a promotional interview for the upcoming Bollywood film Chhorii 2, Soha reflected on her upbringing and the pivotal role her mother played in supporting the family during challenging times.

Soha shared that by the time she was born, her father — the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, former Indian cricket captain — had already retired from cricket. "There was no income coming in from cricket at that time. Back in the 1960s, the sport didn’t offer the kind of commercial opportunities we see today — no IPL, no endorsements," she explained.

The family’s sole source of income came from Sharmila Tagore’s acting career. Soha also noted that amid all the difficulties and pressures, her father never discouraged her mother from working. "He believed in doing what brings you happiness. I’ve heard him say that often. My mother followed her heart and continued acting throughout her life," she added.

Soha went on to praise her mother’s strength and determination, particularly highlighting the societal challenges Sharmila faced as a working actor and a mother. "She got married at the age of 24 — quite early for a female actor. Even though she knew that marriage could hinder a career in films, she chose to start a family. Within two years, she had her first child. And yet, she didn’t let go of her career. In fact, some of her biggest successes came after she became a mother," Soha said.

Sharmila Tagore married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1968. Their first child, actor Saif Ali Khan, was born in 1970, followed by daughter Saba Ali Khan six years later. Soha Ali Khan was born in 1978.

Through her reflections, Soha emphasised the lasting influence her parents had on her, particularly the resilience and grace her mother displayed in balancing personal and professional life — a legacy that continues to inspire her.
