Iconic former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after being fined for a traffic violation in his hometown of Ranchi. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend was issued an e-challan for overspeeding, just as he ramps up preparations for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.

The automated traffic monitoring system near his residence flagged Dhoni’s vehicle for exceeding the permitted speed limit. According to local reports, the incident occurred while the wicketkeeper-batter was picking up a takeaway parcel from a local eatery. A digital fine of ₹1,000 was automatically generated under Section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act. While a minor offence, any news involving the "Captain Cool" quickly gains traction, and the incident has already sparked widespread discussion across social media platforms.

One X user quipped, "Perhaps the Dehati chicken was so tasty that he ended up overspeeding," referencing the player's well-known local food preferences. Others were quick to defend the veteran, with one fan noting that Dhoni is "always fast like a tracer bullet on and off the field, but reliable, safe and secure.”

This traffic hiccup follows a recent notice from the Jharkhand State Housing Board regarding the alleged commercial misuse of a residential plot previously occupied by Dhoni.

Focus shifts to Chepauk

Despite the off-field distractions, Dhoni appears focused on the task at hand. The veteran joined the Chennai Super Kings’ pre-season training camp on Sunday, March 1. Based at the franchise’s High Performance Centre in Navalur, Dhoni was seen in high spirits, reportedly joking with teammates and ‘dancing’ in the nets after leaving wide deliveries.

He joins a squad led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, alongside players such as Sarfaraz Khan and Rahul Chahar, as the team looks to erase the memories of a dismal 2025 campaign.

A crucial season for CSK

The five-time champions face immense pressure this year after finishing at the bottom of the table last season with only four wins. For Dhoni, who averaged 24.50 with a strike rate of 135.17 in 2025, this season represents an opportunity to lead a resurgence for the Yellow Army.(With inputs from Agencies)
