LeBron James’ record-breaking streak of 21 consecutive NBA All-Star Game starts has officially ended.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward was notably absent from the starting lineups for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, which the league revealed Monday. It marks the first time since his rookie season in 2004 that James was not voted as a starter, concluding a two-decade era of dominance in the midseason showcase.

James, 41, finished eighth in the Western Conference fan vote with 1,819,776 tallies. Under the league's weighted formula, which combines fans (50%), current players (25%), and a media panel (25%), James ranked ninth overall in the West. His season has been hampered by a 14-game absence due to sciatica, though he is still averaging 22.6 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.9 rebounds.

The 2026 Starters

Lakers teammate Luka Dončić led all Western Conference players with over 3.4 million fan votes. He is joined in the West starting group by:

  • Nikola Jokić (Denver Nuggets)
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder)
  • Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors)
  • Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs)

In the Eastern Conference, Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) led the way, alongside three first-time starters:

  • Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks)
  • Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia 76ers)
  • Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons)
  • Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics)

Wembanyama secured the final West spot over Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards via a tiebreaker; while the two were tied in player and media rankings, the Spurs sophomore held the edge in fan support.

New 'U.S. vs. World' Format

The 75th NBA All-Star Game, scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, will debut a three-team, round-robin tournament format. The rosters will be divided into "U.S. vs. World," with the 10 announced starters headlining the competition.

The World team appears particularly formidable, featuring four of the league's top vote-getters: Dončić (Slovenia), Jokić (Serbia), Antetokounmpo (Greece), and Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada).

Reserves and Next Steps

While his starting streak is over, James remains the favourite to be selected as a reserve, which would extend his record of 22 consecutive All-Star selections. Reserve players are chosen by NBA head coaches and will be announced on Feb. 2.

James’ record for the most All-Star appearances (20) and most points scored in the event (434) remains unmatched, even as the league's younger generation officially takes centre stage.
