Las Vegas: Max Verstappen, the star driver of Red Bull Racing, stands on the verge of history as he competes in the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend. A win, or simply finishing ahead of his close rival Lando Norris, will make Verstappen only the sixth driver in Formula One history to win four world championship titles.
With 393 points this season, Verstappen holds a commanding 62-point lead over Norris (331 points). The Dutchman only needs to ensure Norris does not finish in the top eight to clinch his fourth consecutive championship. If successful, he will join F1 legends like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Juan Manuel Fangio, Sebastian Vettel, and Alain Prost.
A season of highs and challenges
Verstappen began the season with incredible form, winning seven of the first 10 races. However, a mid-season dip raised questions about his aggressive driving style. He silenced critics three weeks ago in Brazil, storming to victory after starting from 17th on the grid.
"Brazil was incredible for us," said Verstappen.
"It was a really special moment for myself and for the team. The team did an amazing job, and we hope to carry that momentum into Las Vegas. It’s the final push for everyone."
The Vegas challenge
The Las Vegas Grand Prix, a night race on the iconic Strip, promises a fast-paced contest with long straights and plenty of overtaking opportunities. Verstappen won last year’s inaugural Vegas event and is confident about repeating his success.
"We performed well here last year," he added. "It’s a fast circuit, and I’m excited to get back out there."
Norris and McLaren’s hopes
While Verstappen is the clear favorite, Lando Norris and McLaren are not giving up.
McLaren is leading the constructors' championship with 593 points, ahead of Ferrari (557) and Red Bull (544). Norris must not only beat Verstappen but also finish in the top eight to keep his championship hopes alive.
"We’ll be under the lights in Las Vegas," said Norris.
"Driving along the Strip is amazing, and I’m looking forward to it. We’ve had a great car this year, and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve," he added.
A tight constructors’ battle
McLaren’s team chief Zak Brown emphasised the importance of calculated aggression, urging Norris to push hard but avoid unnecessary risks.
"He drove brilliantly in Austin," said Brown. "But we must stay within limits to avoid unnecessary clashes."
With Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and second drivers like Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Sergio Perez (Red Bull) also in the mix, the race for the constructors' title remains intense.
As the F1 circus returns to Las Vegas, the event is set to dazzle fans with its spectacle. In a bid to strengthen ties with the local community, organisers have released 10,000 general admission tickets.
The newly-appointed race director, Rui Marques, will oversee the event, ensuring smooth operations following the sudden departure of his predecessor, Niels Wittich. With so much on the line, all eyes will be on Las Vegas this weekend as Verstappen aims to cement his place in F1 history.
