Chris Hoy, the legendary British cyclist who has won Olympic gold six times, has shared his struggles during a tumultuous period in his life in his new book, ‘All That Matters’. The cyclist faced a life-altering diagnosis of cancer, which was compounded by the discovery that his wife, Sarra, has multiple sclerosis (MS).
Hoy recounted the moment he learned he had stage 4 cancer, revealing that doctors initially informed him he had only four years to live. He had sought medical help due to severe shoulder pain, suspecting an injury from his workouts at the gym. However, tests revealed tumours in his shoulder, hip, and backbone.
Reflecting on his journey, Hoy expressed hope despite the grim prognosis. He wrote, “I expected wonderful things to happen in my life,” noting that cancer had affected both his grandfather and father.
Tragically, shortly after his diagnosis, Sarra was also diagnosed with MS. She experienced a burning sensation in her face and tongue, which prompted her to seek medical advice. Although she discovered her condition in November, she kept it a secret for a month before revealing it to Chris.
Chris described the challenges Sarah faced, including difficulties in performing basic tasks, but noted her resilience. “She always says how lucky we are,” he shared, emphasising her ability to find solace in their shared experiences, particularly given the severity of her condition compared to many others.
The couple married in Edinburgh in 2010 and are parents to a son and a daughter. Despite their health challenges, they continue to support each other through their respective battles. (Withy inputs from Agencies)
