Miami: Cape Verde produced one of the greatest nights in their footballing history, holding two-time world champions Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Miami Stadium in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament debutants, colloquially known as the 'Blue Sharks', shocked the South American giants by taking the lead in the 21st minute. Midfielder Kevin Pina etched his name into folklore by unleashing a blistering 32-yard free-kick that flew directly through the Uruguayan wall, leaving goalkeeper Fernando Muslera completely beaten to score his country's first-ever World Cup goal.

Uruguay, managed by Marcelo Bielsa, responded with relentless pressure. La Celeste accumulated an expected goals (xG) metric of 1.93 during a dominant first-half display. Their persistence was rewarded in the 44th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur’s powerful header struck the post, allowing Maximiliano Araújo to react quickest and nod home the rebound. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Araújo turned provider, cushioning a header across the face of the goal for Agustín Canobbio to tap in from close range, giving Uruguay a 2-1 lead at the interval.

However, Cape Verde refused to succumb. In the 61st minute, a calamitous defensive error by Uruguay’s Mathías Olivera turned the game on its head. Olivera played a wayward pass across his own backline, which was eagerly intercepted by Cape Verde substitute Hélio Varela. With Muslera stranded far off his line, Varela composed himself perfectly to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net, sparking wild celebrations.

Uruguay pushed frantically for a late winner, introducing star striker Darwin Núñez to bolster their attack. La Celeste came agonisingly close in the dying moments; Federico Valverde fired a promising free-kick over the crossbar, and Canobbio missed a glorious one-on-one opportunity by lifting his effort over the woodwork.
