Philadelphia: Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty proved the difference as France edged past Paraguay 1-0 to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after a tense Round of 16 clash here on Sunday.
The French captain kept his composure from the spot in the 65th minute after the referee awarded a penalty following a VAR review for a foul on Désiré Doué inside the box. Mbappé calmly sent goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score the only goal of the contest and seal France's passage into the last eight.
The victory extends France's impressive run in the tournament and sets up a quarter-final showdown against Morocco.
France dominated possession for long spells but struggled to break down Paraguay's disciplined five-man defence during a cagey first half. Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise all threatened without finding a breakthrough, while Paraguay remained organised and looked to hit Les Bleus on the counter.
Paraguay gradually grew into the contest after the break, with Andrés Cubas and Diego Gómez testing France from distance. However, the South Americans were dealt a blow when defender Omar Alderete was forced off injured before Julio Enciso also made way as they searched for fresh legs.
The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half when Doué danced into the penalty area and went down under pressure. After initially waving play on, the referee was called to the monitor and pointed to the spot following a VAR review.
Mbappé made no mistake, drilling home his penalty to register his 19th World Cup goal in just 19 appearances. The strike also saw him equal the combined World Cup goal tally of French legends Thierry Henry, Olivier Giroud, Zinedine Zidane and Karim Benzema.
France nearly doubled their advantage minutes later as Mbappé curled a fine effort toward the far corner, only for Gill to produce a superb save.
France will next face Morocco on Thursday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
