Canada responded with a 76th-minute goal from substitute Promise David, sparking a late offensive surge, but the Swiss defense held firm. Switzerland advances to the Round of 32 as group winners, while Canada moves forward as runners-up.

Vancouver: Co-hosts Canada suffered a reality check on home soil on Wednesday after a clinical Switzerland side secured a 2-1 victory in a tense Group B finale at BC Place to claim the top spot in the group.
The European side managed to weather a frantic late onslaught from the home team, confirming their fourth consecutive appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages. With this result, Switzerland are set to play a third-placed team from Group E, F, G, I, or J in the Round of 32, whilst Canada advances as runners-up to face the second-placed team from Group A.
Blistering Swiss Re-start
The match began with Switzerland dominating territorial play. Murat Yakin's side controlled a commanding 70% of the possession during a scoreless first half, efficiently circulating the ball through midfielders Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji. However, Canada’s defensive line held firm, with goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau pulling off a crucial spread-eagled save in the 11th minute to deny Breel Embolo from close range.
The tactical gridlock was shattered immediately after the interval. Just 40 seconds into the second half, midfielder Johan Manzambi drove up the right wing and fired a low cross across the face of the penalty box. Winger Rubén Vargas caught the Canadian defence flat-footed, controlling the pass cleanly before slamming a powerful shot past Crépeau.
The co-hosts were rattled further in the 57th minute. Embolo picked up the ball in the penalty area, delaying his movement perfectly to slip a pass to the overlapping Manzambi. The young midfielder's firm strike squeezed through the hands of Crépeau, extending the Swiss advantage to 2-0 and silencing the Vancouver crowd.
Super Substitute Sparks Fightback
Jesse Marsch’s Canadian squad refused to capitulate and initiated a triple substitution, bringing on fresh attacking options to shift towards direct play. The tactical gamble paid immediate dividends in the 76th minute. Midfielder Nathan Saliba executed an exquisite piece of control on an aerial pass, turning sharply to lob a square cross to substitute Promise David. The forward, making his first touch of the match, stretched out to volley the ball past Swiss keeper Gregor Kobel from 12 yards out.
The goal ignited a frantic finale, with Canada forcing multiple corner kicks. In the dying minutes of stoppage time, Alistair Johnston directed a flat cross toward the far post, but defender Derek Cornelius saw his goalward header comfortably handled by Kobel. Despite Canada outshooting the visitors overall, Switzerland's tactical discipline held firm until the final whistle, sealing a deserved victory on the global stage.
