Despite early pressure from Algeria, Switzerland’s solid defensive structure ensured a clean sheet and a spot in the next round.

Vancouver: Switzerland secured their place in the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disciplined 2–0 victory over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver. The result brings an end to the Desert Foxes' campaign in the tournament's Round of 32.
The match began with early promise for Algeria, who carved out a significant chance in the 7th minute when Riyad Mahrez found Houssem Aouar unmarked in the penalty area. However, Aouar failed to make clean contact, letting the Swiss off the hook.
Switzerland capitalised on this reprieve in the 10th minute. A brilliant solo run from the young forward Johan Manzambi carved open the Algerian defence, allowing him to cut the ball back for Breel Embolo to tap home from close range. Despite Algeria’s efforts to respond—including a near-miss from Ibrahim Maza just before the break—the Swiss went into half-time with their narrow advantage intact.
The second half began in disastrous fashion for the Desert Foxes. Barely a minute after the restart, a defensive failure to clear the ball allowed Dan Ndoye to collect possession on the edge of the box. Ndoye’s composed, low strike found the far corner, extending the Swiss lead to 2–0 and effectively extinguishing Algeria’s momentum.
Algeria struggled to find cohesion in their attacking play for the remainder of the contest. Algeria struggled to break down the Swiss, with the team’s frustration mounting as they were unable to convert their possession into meaningful goal-scoring opportunities.
Murat Yakin’s side maintained their defensive shape to see out the victory, confirming their spot in the next round of the tournament. The loss marks a disappointing exit for Algeria, who were unable to replicate the late-game heroics seen elsewhere in the tournament. Switzerland will now progress, buoyed by a clinical performance and a clean sheet at BC Place.
