Bengaluru (Karnataka): Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has reached another remarkable milestone in his illustrious career by becoming the all-time leading goal-scorer in the Indian Super League (ISL), the country's premier football competition. Chhetri scored his 64th ISL goal from the penalty spot, contributing to Bengaluru FC's emphatic 3-0 victory over the defending ISL champions Mohun Bagan SG at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Saturday.

A Historic Achievement for the Veteran Striker

The veteran forward, who was previously tied on 63 goals with Bartholomew Ogbeche, has now secured this title with his historic strike. This goal marks Chhetri's 57th ISL goal for Bengaluru FC, having also scored seven times for Mumbai City FC during his tenure with the Islanders in the 2015 and 2016 seasons, as noted in an ISL press release. Despite announcing his retirement from international football in June, Chhetri continues to excel at the club level, netting his third goal of the 2024-25 season. He currently leads the ISL scoring charts, a position he has often held throughout his career.

Team Success Over Personal Glory

Following the match, Chhetri downplayed his personal achievement in favour of celebrating the team's success. "I am really happy to win the game. Whatever goals I have scored are because of the team I have played with. It has been a long journey with Bengaluru FC in the ISL. But I am just happy that we won the game. When the season ends, we will see how many goals I get, but for now, it is all about three points," he stated.

Chhetri played a crucial role in Bengaluru FC's victory, not only scoring a landmark goal but also assisting Suresh Singh for the second strike. His performance included completing 10 of his 16 attempted passes and creating two goal-scoring opportunities. With goals from Edgar Mendez, Suresh, and Chhetri, Bengaluru FC has made their best-ever start to an ISL campaign, sitting at the top of the table with nine points from three matches, having scored seven goals and conceded none. The Blues are set to face their first away game of the season on Wednesday against the defending ISL Cup winners, Mumbai City FC.
