The forward became only the sixth Spanish player to score four or more goals in a single World Cup

Mikel Oyarzabal etched his name into Spain's FIFA World Cup history with a match-winning brace as La Roja outclassed Austria 3-0 to book their place in the Round of 16 on Friday.
The forward became only the sixth Spanish player to score four or more goals in a single World Cup, moving within one strike of the national record jointly held by Emilio Butragueño (1986) and David Villa (2010).
Most goals for Spain at a single World Cup:
- 5: Emilio Butragueño (1986)
- 5: David Villa (2010)
- 4: Mikel Oyarzabal (2026)
- 4: Míchel (1990)
- 4: Telmo Zarra (1950)
- 4: Estanislau Basora (1950)
Backed by a sea of red at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and watched by Hollywood stars Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and singer Rosalia, Spain dominated possession from the outset and repeatedly carved open Austria's defence. Marc Cucurella thought he had opened the scoring from a Lamine Yamal corner before the effort was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Schlager then denied Oyarzabal with a fine diving save, while Álex Baena struck the crossbar from a free-kick as Spain continued to pile on the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute when Pedri released Cucurella down the left, and the full-back's inviting cross was calmly side-footed home by Oyarzabal. Austria rarely threatened, although substitute Saša Kalajdžić headed over shortly after halftime as Ralf Rangnick's side searched for a way back into the contest.
Spain doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Pedro Porro, who powered home a header from Baena's floated cross after another slick passing move. David Alaba produced a goal-line clearance to deny Yamal, but Austria's resistance finally crumbled again in the 89th minute when Cucurella picked out an unmarked Oyarzabal inside the box for his second goal of the night, sealing a comprehensive victory.
The convincing win sends Luis de la Fuente's side into a mouthwatering Round of 16 clash against either Portugal or Croatia, with Spain underlining their status as one of the favourites for the FIFA World Cup title after another commanding display.
