Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is not afraid of the bitter truth behind his side's poor results, conceding that their woes extend beyond the football pitch. In an interview with TNT Sports, the Portuguese manager admitted that the psychological burden of expectation has impacted his players, especially at Old Trafford, where United have lost five home games under his management.
"I think that [people believe in me]. And at the same time, I'm ashamed of it because if you observe our performance and you look at our team at times on the field, it's very difficult for me as a coach to take a lot of positives," Amorim admitted.
With United under threat of their worst-ever Premier League finish, the season has been characterized by inconsistency. Although still in the hunt for silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League, league performances have seen fans and commentators doubt their ability to play at the top level.
Even after signing up for the club from Sporting CP in November when expectations were so high, Amorim hasn't been able to deliver an impressive turnaround. His record for now consists of 23 matches, 11 victories, and nine defeats with five of these losses at home. Although still hopeful, he admits the mental pressure his team bears.
"I believe we are so anxious at times in the match, and you can sense it in the little things," Amorim described. "The manner in which we travel at times, the mentality of the game, particularly at Old Trafford. I believe at times the players are in the dressing room, and we warm up and go in to begin the game, I believe the atmosphere is thick. These sorts of things, I believe, tell a great deal in the games."
The United manager also referred to his team's inconsistency when confronted with challenges.
"When we lose a goal or we have a bad spell, you feel like the link is not there, we lose ourselves. We get lost a little bit. I know it is more than football, more than tactics, it is something that is in the players' minds."
FA Cup clash with Fulham: Chance for redemption?
With their top-flight season so far under pressure, United's best hope for success this year may be the FA Cup. They play Fulham in Sunday's fifth round, with quarter-final entry riding on it. United are reigning champions, and a win could restore morale. But Marco Silva's Fulham will not prove to be pushovers.
Even though United were having a rough patch, the club captain Harry Maguire had publicly defended Amorim, stating that the team was sticking by his style of play.
"This set of players believes in Ruben's tactics. We're aware we maybe need additions. We can't deny it. If we wish to return to winning silverware, we will have to support the team with new arrivals," Maguire acknowledged.
The England defender also recognized the adjustments Amorim has made to the team's style of play.
"Tactics are important, of course, because we've altered our way of playing, but if you look at our games, you'll notice that sometimes we play with three defenders, sometimes four, sometimes five. That's football today."
In spite of the absence of instant results, Maguire is sure that Amorim's vision will be successful.
"We have a lot of faith in Ruben, his tactics, and his whole coaching staff. When he first arrived, his ideas and enthusiasm were really refreshing. We just weren't winning the games we should have been winning. But we are confident and believe we can do better as players," he said.
"Ruben is great. He planted huge belief in me as an individual and gave me the confidence to play and express myself and play my best football. At Sporting, he showed that with the right players and the right structure, his team will win trophies and football games. Players must accept this and be a part of the long-term vision," he added.
With United on the brink of a crisis in their season, Amorim's power to boost his team's morale and achieve results will be more important than ever. Though he still has the support of his players, it is only a turn in form that will quiet increasing skepticism. The FA Cup match against Fulham will serve as the first step to redemption—or yet another letdown in a season of disappointment.
