Houston: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken yet another international boundary, becoming the first male player in football history to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.

The historic milestone was achieved during Portugal’s Group K encounter against Uzbekistan at the Houston Stadium on Tuesday, 23 June 2026. The 41-year-old forward opened the scoring in the sixth minute, converting an early opportunity into a clinical finish to give his side a 1-0 lead.

A Record of Unparalleled Longevity

Ronaldo's World Cup scoring odyssey began at Germany 2006 and has remarkably continued through South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022, and now the 2026 tournament in North America.

While Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the first men's player to feature in six World Cups earlier in the tournament during a 3-0 win over Algeria, Ronaldo stands entirely alone as the only player to find the back of the net in six separate iterations of the competition.

Snapping the International Drought

The early goal brings immense tactical relief for both the player and his national side. Ronaldo had entered the fixture under considerable scrutiny following a frustrating 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, during which he was restricted to just 25 touches. The 6th-minute strike effectively snaps a 10-match goal drought in major international tournament fixtures for the forward, a barren run stretching back across Euro 2024 and the latter stages of the 2022 World Cup.

This goal also lifts Ronaldo’s all-time international scoring tally to an unprecedented 144 goals for Portugal, further cementing his position as the highest-scoring male player in international football history. It also marks his ninth career goal at the World Cup finals.
