Paris: Paris Saint-Germain mounted a stunning late comeback before beating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, securing their fifth trophy of 2025.
Nuno Mendes struck the decisive spot kick after PSG scored twice in the final minutes of regulation to erase Tottenham’s 2-0 lead in the annual clash between the Champions League and Europa League winners.
Lee Kang-in pulled one back in the 85th minute with a low drive into the corner, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed in Ousmane Dembele’s cross in the fourth minute of stoppage time to force extra time.
Tottenham appeared poised for an upset after going 2-0 ahead in the shootout following Vitinha’s miss for PSG. But Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed from the spot for Spurs, allowing PSG to convert four straight penalties, capped by Mendes’ winner.
“Sometimes football is unfair,” PSG coach Luis Enrique said. “We were very lucky in the last 10 minutes to score two goals.”
PSG, which won a domestic treble last season along with the Trophee des Champions in January, had only returned to training six days earlier after an extended season that ended with a Club World Cup loss to Chelsea in July.
It was a memorable debut for goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who joined from Lille to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma. Chevalier tipped Joao Palhinha’s shot onto the bar before Van de Ven scored the opener in the 39th minute, then failed to stop Cristian Romero’s header early in the second half. He redeemed himself by saving Van de Ven’s penalty in the shootout.
