Mexico City: Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié has become the second player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be issued a red card under the new regulation designed to curb on-pitch misconduct. The incident occurred during the final moments of Ecuador's 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the Round of 32 at the Estadio Azteca.

The Incident

During stoppage time, Hincapié was involved in a heated exchange with Mexico forward Santiago Giménez. Hincapié appeared to approach Giménez and deliberately covered his mouth with his hand while speaking. Following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), referee Slavko Vinčić issued a red card, dismissing the defender from the pitch in the 95th minute.

The New Regulation

This dismissal follows a strict new directive established by FIFA intended to prevent players from using hand gestures to conceal abusive or inappropriate language directed at opponents. The rule allows match officials to penalise players who deliberately obscure their mouths during confrontational exchanges, with a red card being the prescribed punishment for such breaches.

Precedent at the 2026 Tournament

Hincapié is the second player to face this sanction at the current World Cup. The first player to be penalised under this regulation was Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón, who was sent off earlier in the tournament during a group-stage match against Turkey.

While the loss to Mexico marked the end of Ecuador’s tournament campaign, the fallout from the match continues. While Hincapié will not serve a suspension in this tournament, the red card carries disciplinary implications that will impact his availability for his team's next international fixture.

FIFA had maintained that the measure is necessary to uphold standards of respect and to aid officials in identifying misconduct that would otherwise be hidden from view.
