When Paraguay knocked four-time champions Germany out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, the spotlight belonged to goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The towering shot-stopper emerged as Paraguay’s unlikely hero, producing a string of crucial saves before denying Germany twice in a dramatic penalty shootout to send his country into the Round of 16.

Yet, long before he became a World Cup sensation, Gill was fighting a far more important battle off the pitch. Just four years ago, he sold almost everything he owned, including treasured jerseys, clothes and shoes, to pay for his newborn son’s medical treatment.

When life forced Gill to sell everything

In 2022, while serving as a little-known reserve goalkeeper for Argentine club San Lorenzo, Gill found himself facing a devastating family crisis.

His wife, Melissa Avalos, gave birth to their son, Lautaro Daniel, who was born with severe medical complications and required intensive care. With hospital bills mounting and his modest football salary proving insufficient, Gill made unimaginable sacrifices to keep his son alive.

He didn’t simply tighten his budget, he sold the possessions that represented years of hard work and dreams.

In an emotional Instagram post recalling those difficult days, Melissa Avalos revealed the extent of her husband’s sacrifice.

“Our son fought for his life and his father was always there for him. He sold everything… he sold his U-20 national team jersey—he couldn’t even keep it as a souvenir—he sold his clothes, his sneakers, he literally sold everything! Everything!”

Gill even spent nights sleeping in his car to save money. The only thing he refused to part with was his goalkeeper’s gloves.

Redemption on Football’s Biggest Stage

Few could have predicted that the same goalkeeper would become Paraguay’s World Cup hero just a few years later.

Gill earned his senior international debut only in late 2025 and arrived at the FIFA World Cup with just six international appearances. Even then, doubts surrounded him.

Paraguay goalkeeping legend José Luis Chilavert publicly questioned Gill’s credentials, describing him as “mute” and criticising his leadership.

Gill delivered his response in the biggest match of his career.

Against Germany in Boston, he produced a series of outstanding saves across 120 exhausting minutes as Paraguay held the European giants to a 1-1 draw.

The Penalty Shootout That Changed Everything

When the contest moved to penalties, Gill completed one of the greatest performances of the tournament.

The Paraguayan goalkeeper guessed correctly to deny Arsenal forward Kai Havertz before producing another decisive stop against Nick Woltemade, sealing a stunning 4-3 shootout victory that sent Germany crashing out.
