Paraguay's Matías Galarza set a new record for the fastest goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, scoring just 65 seconds into his side's Group D clash against Turkey and breaking a mark that had stood for barely five hours.

Matías Galarza opened the scoring with a stunning left-footed effort from outside the area, finding the bottom-right corner from a Julio Enciso assist.

Earlier in the day, Morocco's Ismael Saibari had become the tournament's quickest scorer when he found the net after 71 seconds in a 1-0 victory over Scotland at Gillette Stadium. Saibari's stunning strike, assisted by Brahim Diaz, eclipsed the previous benchmark and kept Morocco firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. However, his record proved short-lived as Galarza rewrote the history books later on Friday with a thunderous effort from outside the box after just 65 seconds.

Saibari's goal highlighted his growing influence at the World Cup. The forward had already scored Morocco's lone goal in a 1-1 draw against Brazil in the team's opening Group C fixture and needed only a little over a minute to make his mark in his second appearance. Morocco held on for a crucial win over Scotland, leaving the Scots needing a positive result against Brazil in their final group-stage match to keep their qualification hopes alive.

A draw or a Paraguay victory would seal top spot in Group D for the United States. However, a Turkey win would leave the group wide open heading into the final round of matches, when the Americans face Turkey in Los Angeles on June 24.

Turkey entered the contest after a 2-0 defeat to Australia in its opening game, while the USMNT cruised to a 4-1 victory over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium. With the expanded 48-team World Cup allowing the eight best third-placed teams to progress, three points here would significantly strengthen either side's chances of reaching the knockout stage.
