The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final between England and Norway not only captivated football fans but also turned into a high-profile corporate showdown on social media. Following England’s dramatic 2-1 victory in extra time at Miami Stadium, the terms of a viral Instagram wager between British Airways and Norwegian Air have been settled, with the latter now set to sport their rival’s colours.

The wager, which began on 8 July, saw Norwegian Air challenge the British carrier to a friendly bet: the airline representing the losing nation would be required to switch its official Instagram profile picture to the winner’s logo for 24 hours. The exchange quickly went viral, drawing participation from other global carriers, including Austrian Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and SWISS, who chimed in with humorous commentary as the match approached.

The Norwegian wrote on its social media, "While the tournament is over for us, this friendly bet will forever live in all our hearts. We wish England and British Airways all the best in the semi-final, and we sincerely hope you’ll get to bring football home!"

British Airways also replied, "Rivals for 90 minutes, friends forever. A little competition keeps things interesting, thanks for challenging us."

England’s progression to the semi-finals was secured through a standout performance by Jude Bellingham, who netted both of England's goals—including the decisive winner in the 93rd minute of extra time—following an opening strike by Norway’s Andreas Schjelderup. The result marked the end of a historic tournament run for Norway, who had reached the quarter-finals for the first time.

With the outcome decided on the pitch, attention turned to the promised digital swap. According to the terms of the agreement, Norwegian Air honoured the bet and replaced its Instagram branding with that of British Airways for the stipulated 24-hour period.

The social media interaction was widely praised by fans and marketing experts alike for its light-hearted tone and ability to engage audiences beyond traditional sports coverage.

England now moves forward to face Argentina in the semi-finals at Atlanta Stadium on 16 July, while Norway departs the tournament having left a significant impression on the global stage.
