The victory comes amid swirling rumors of a potential fallout between Messi and former Argentina teammate Javier Mascherano, after cameras caught a tense exchange during Miami’s 5–3 defeat to Chicago Fire earlier in the week. Mascherano swiftly dismissed the claims, calling them “nonsense.”

“There’s no problem with Leo,” the Argentine said. “It came out in the press that he was challenging me, which is really nonsense.”

Earlier in the week, Miami suffered a setback at home, conceding five goals to Chicago and seeing their Supporters’ Shield hopes diminish.
