Miami: Defending champions Argentina narrowly avoided a major upset on Saturday (IST), securing a hard-fought 3–2 victory over tournament debutants Cape Verde in an extra-time classic during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

The match, held in Miami, saw the reigning title-holders pushed to the limit by a resilient Cape Verde side. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, latching onto a lofted pass from Lisandro Martínez to record his 20th career FIFA World Cup goal. However, Cape Verde responded with remarkable composure, with Deroy Duarte and Sidny Lopes Cabral finding equalisers to force the game into an additional period.

Speaking to the media after the fixture, an appreciative Messi reflected on the intensity of the encounter. "We knew this would be a very tough match. In the World Cup, no one gives you anything for free," the Argentina captain stated. He further emphasised the necessity of refocusing for the next stage, adding, "Now it's about resting, learning from today, and focusing on the next game. Also, congratulations to Cape Verde for that great performance."

The Argentine captain also touched upon the mental fortitude required for such knockout ties. Messi noted that the team initially struggled to maintain momentum after their opening goal, stating, "We thought that from then on, we would start to find our game and be more relaxed, but it was the complete opposite." He also stated, "It's no coincidence that this team hasn't lost to Spain or Uruguay."
