Humbled 7-2 by Barcelona to exit the Champions League in midweek, Newcastle's hopes of European football next season were dented after Sunderland came from behind.

London: The Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Sunderland was briefly halted on Sunday following an incident of alleged discriminatory abuse from the crowd.
The match at St James' Park was stopped in the second half after Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who is Black, was reportedly subjected to abuse from sections of the stands.
League officials said the pause was implemented in accordance with established anti-discrimination protocols, adding that a formal investigation into the incident will follow.
“Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all,” the league said in a statement.
The high-profile derby had already seen tensions build before kickoff, with videos circulating online showing clashes between rival supporters outside the stadium. However, Northumbria Police confirmed that only one arrest was made ahead of the match.
On the pitch, Sunderland secured a 2-1 victory, with Brian Brobbey netting a late winner to seal the result.

Another defeat to their local rivals will sting ever more as the Black Cats extended a club record unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 11 games.
Sunderland's victory also takes them up to 11th and above the Magpies in the table.
