Liverpool manager Arne Slot is to leave the club with immediate effect after the Reds decided to part ways with the Dutch coach following a disappointing title defence campaign. The decision brings an end to Slot's two-year spell at Anfield, despite him guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title in his first season in charge after succeeding Jürgen Klopp.

The decision was announced after an end-of-season review, with the club concluding that a change in direction was needed despite securing qualification for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League.

Slot departs with immediate effect after Liverpool's campaign unravelled following their league-winning success. The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League and ended the season without silverware despite significant investment in the transfer market.

Reports of unrest had intensified during the season, particularly after Mohamed Salah publicly criticised the team's tactical approach before his departure from the club was confirmed. Supporter frustration also became increasingly visible as results deteriorated, with boos heard at Anfield following a draw against Chelsea late in the season.

Liverpool explain decision to part ways with Slot

In a lengthy statement, Liverpool's ownership acknowledged the significance of Slot's achievements but said the club had reached the conclusion that a managerial change was required.

The statement read, “That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.

“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.

“From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it. This was evident when he agreed to take over as head coach, when he guided us to the Premier League title and throughout the season just ended when he faced considerable challenges and burdens.

“At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but.”

From title-winning debut to difficult second season

Slot arrived at Liverpool in 2024 as the successor to Jürgen Klopp and immediately exceeded expectations by guiding the club to the Premier League title in his first season in charge.

However, the momentum generated by that success failed to carry into the following campaign. Liverpool struggled for consistency, dropped out of the title race and ultimately finished outside the top four, prompting growing scrutiny of the manager's future.

Despite speculation surrounding his position throughout the season, Slot had indicated after a disappointing draw with Chelsea that he expected to remain at Anfield.

Further pressure emerged before the final match of the season when several Liverpool players reportedly endorsed comments made by Salah on social media regarding the tactical changes introduced under Slot compared with Klopp's approach.

The campaign ended quietly with a 1-1 draw against Brentford, with no on-pitch speeches despite tributes being paid to departing club figures including Salah and Andy Robertson.

Club pays tribute to Slot's legacy

While announcing his departure, Liverpool were keen to emphasise Slot's contribution to the club and the lasting place he will hold in its history.

The statement continued, “We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.

“That accomplishment – made all the more remarkable as it arrived in his very first season in charge – was built on outstanding coaching and leadership every single day. He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.

“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come. Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

Liverpool also posted on social media announcing the decision, writing, “He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”

Iraola emerges as leading candidate

Attention is now expected to turn towards Liverpool's search for a successor, with Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading contender for the vacancy.

The Spaniard recently confirmed his departure from Bournemouth after overseeing an impressive campaign that secured Europa League qualification for the south coast club.

Liverpool are expected to begin formal discussions regarding their next manager in the coming days as the club prepares for a pivotal summer following a turbulent end to Slot's tenure.
