Yamal appeared to address that criticism during Spain's win over Austria by wearing the now-viral headband

Lamine Yamal's headband carrying the words "Ego Yamal" became one of the biggest talking points of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after Spain's 3-0 victory over Austria, with fans speculating whether it was aimed at his critics or simply a bold fashion statement.
The Barcelona winger has been among the standout performers of the tournament, playing a key role in Spain's run to the Round of 16. But with his rapid rise has come increased attention, and on social media, some users have labelled the teenager "Ego Lamine," accusing him of being overly confident because of his swagger on the pitch.
Yamal appeared to address that criticism during Spain's win over Austria by wearing the now-viral headband, which remained visible throughout the match and immediately sparked widespread debate online.
According to Spanish radio station COPE, the headband was no coincidence. The outlet reported that the message was a direct response to the nickname circulating on TikTok, where some users have mockingly referred to the Spain international as "Ego Lamine" in an attempt to criticise what they perceive as his growing ego.
Instead of distancing himself from the label, Yamal chose to embrace it.
COPE, citing sources close to the player, reported that the Barcelona star has taken the nickname with a sense of humour and deliberately reclaimed it by wearing it during one of Spain's biggest matches of the tournament.
The move quickly went viral across social media, with many supporters applauding the 19-year-old for turning online criticism into a statement of confidence rather than allowing it to define him.
