Kansas City: Tournament debutants Curaçao produced a defensive masterclass to hold Ecuador to a 0-0 draw in their Group E fixture at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, keeping their faint FIFA World Cup hopes alive.

Ecuador dominated large stretches of the encounter but were repeatedly thwarted by an inspired performance from Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room. The South American side, looking to bounce back from an opening-day defeat to the Ivory Coast, asserted control early on. Captain Enner Valencia was presented with a golden opportunity in front of goal in the first half, but Room reacted brilliantly to deny the veteran striker and maintain the stalemate.

Ecuador’s midfield, orchestrated by Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo, maintained sustained pressure on the Caribbean nation throughout the match. Despite the intense heat in Kansas City, which required referee Ma Ning to implement multiple cooling breaks, Curaçao remained compact and disciplined in their defensive block under manager Dick Advocaat.

Late Drama in the Heat

The drama intensified significantly in the second half. Bolavip reported that Ecuador substitute Kevin Rodríguez went close in the 62nd minute, driving down the left flank before flashing a dangerous shot just wide of the far post. Moments later, Room produced another stunning reflex save to deny a powerful header from Valencia following a precise cross from Jhon Yeboah.

Room accumulated an astonishing 15 saves over the course of the 90 minutes to keep his side level. Ecuador's mounting frustrations peaked in the final moments of normal time. In the 90th minute, substitute Ángelo Preciado latched onto a late chance, only to see his goalbound strike crash agonisingly against the post and bounce away. Minutes later, a desperate final effort from Jordy Caicedo also failed to find the net.

The fiercely contested match saw several players enter the referee's book as tackles flew in. Curaçao's Leandro Bacuna, Juninho Bacuna, Livano Comenencia, Juriën Gaari, and Gervane Kastaneer all received yellow cards as they fought to preserve the clean sheet, whilst Ecuador's Jordy Alcívar was penalised in the first half.

The result leaves Group E wide open heading into the final round of matches. While Ecuador will undoubtedly rue their missed opportunities, Curaçao walk away with a historic and hard-earned first World Cup point, successfully restoring pride following their heavy opening-match loss to Germany.
