Santa Clara: In a dramatic Round of 32 clash between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Folarin Balogun etched his name into a unique—and unwanted—piece of footballing history. The Monaco striker became only the fourth player in the history of the tournament to score a goal and be sent off in the same knockout match.

Balogun’s evening was a rollercoaster of emotions. He opened the scoring for the United States on the stroke of half-time, putting the co-hosts 1-0 ahead in Santa Clara. However, his fortunes shifted in the 64th minute when a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic was reviewed by VAR. Referee Raphael Claus deemed the foul a "serious" offence, resulting in a straight red card that left the Americans to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
