A dramatic late offside call denied Iran victory as Egypt booked a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Egypt secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after battling to a 1-1 draw against Iran in their final Group G fixture, while the Asian side was left heartbroken after a late goal was ruled out for offside.
The result ensured Egypt progressed as group runners-up behind Belgium, who topped the standings after thrashing New Zealand 5-1 in the other Group G clash.
Iran, meanwhile, finished third and must now wait to learn whether their tally is enough to qualify as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
The North Africans made a dream start to the contest, taking the lead within the opening five minutes.
A costly error from Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand gifted Ahmed Saber the opportunity to score, putting Egypt in front early.
Iran had a golden chance to restore parity almost immediately when they were awarded a penalty. However, striker Mehdi Taremi failed to convert as Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly to make a crucial save.
The missed penalty did little to dent Iran's confidence. They continued to press forward and found the equaliser minutes later through Ramin Rezaeian, who finished off a well-worked attacking move to make it 1-1.
The remainder of the game saw both sides trade attacks in a tense battle, with qualification hanging in the balance.
Iran looked the more determined side in the closing stages and believed they had found the decisive goal deep into stoppage time.
Wild celebrations erupted after the ball hit the back of the net, but the joy was short-lived.
Following a VAR review, referee Szymon Marciniak ruled the goal out for offside, leaving Iranian players stunned and Egyptian fans relieved.
The final whistle confirmed Egypt's progression to the knockout stage, while Belgium finished top of Group G following their emphatic victory over New Zealand.
Iran's World Cup campaign is still alive, but only just. With three points from three matches, Team Melli must now hope their record compares favourably with other third-placed teams across the tournament to secure a place in the Round of 32.
