Kolkata: The countdown to the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup has officially begun after the tournament's three iconic trophies arrived in Kolkata, the principal host city since 2019.

The silverware was showcased in the city on Wednesday after completing a multi-state Trophy Tour across all five host states ahead of the prestigious football tournament, which begins on July 25.

The tournament will open with the much-awaited Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, setting the stage for another edition of Asia's oldest football competition.

Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, Chief of Staff, Eastern Command and Chairman of the Durand Cup Organising Committee, described the tournament as a symbol of military-civil partnership and highlighted Kolkata's enduring football culture.

He said the city's role as the principal host has helped strengthen the legacy of India's oldest football tournament.

Major General Dinesh Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee, said the extension of the tournament under the Eastern Command until 2032 reflects its growing stature and the strong support it has received over the years.

West Bengal Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports, Indranil Sen, called the tournament a matter of pride for football lovers in the state and urged fans to pack the stadiums from the opening match to the final on August 23.

Rajesh Pandey, Additional Chief Secretary, also praised the tournament's rich legacy and reaffirmed the state's support in hosting another successful edition.

The 135th edition will feature 24 teams, including a Sri Lankan Armed Forces side, with matches spread across Kolkata, Ranchi, Guwahati, Shillong and Imphal.

Along with the group-stage fixtures, Kolkata will also host a quarterfinal, a semifinal and the final, reaffirming its status as the heart of the Durand Cup.
